This selective program provides unique laboratory experiences for qualified undergraduates, placing each student into research groups directed by our well-respected Faculty. For nine weeks the undergraduate summer researcher becomes part of the group, working side-by-side with post-docs, graduate students, and other undergraduates.
Each student has the opportunity to play a part in cutting-edge research and be a contributing member of the research team. In addition to the valuable laboratory experience, each summer student participates in research discussion groups and safety training, and has the opportunity to participate in social activities with SURF students from other departments, summer field trips, including an industrial chemistry laboratory tour, and an end-of-summer research poster session.
This program will run for nine weeks, from 30 May - 31 July All program participants are expected to complete the full nine weeks of the program, including all mandatory activities. The research pursued by undergraduates is often related to a project of a current postdoc or graduate student. This mentor will be very important in helping formulate your ideas for the proposal.
The proposal should provide a justification of the research and provide a focused research plan. Realize that this is a limited research program -- be realistic. First and foremost, write the proposal in your own words. Also, your proposal should have a contingency plan in case campus access is restricted. Notification of the awards will be by email, usually within one week. Awards will be made on a competitive basis according to the following criteria: 1 the quality and reasonable nature of the proposed plan of research, 2 the strength of the supporting letter, and 3 evidence of scholarship from the applicant as reflected in their academic transcript.
