Windows xp disk defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled

If it wants to run, you should let it run. A volume could be marked dirty from something like a power interruption, aborted restart or ungraceful shutdown. If you have scheduled a chkdsk to run on the next reboot, you can "undo" that, but you cannot undo the automatic chkdsk that wants to run on dirty volumes.

If a volume is dirty, you will not be able to run defrag on it until the dirty bit is cleared. You can query the dirty bit on a volume from the command prompt window. To query the dirty bit on drive C, type: fsutil dirty query C: Sample output: Volume C: is dirty Volume C: is not dirty Type 'exit' to close the command prompt window.

Is the volume on which you want to run defrag dirty or is it not dirty? That is the only way to clear the dirty bit. Note: The Recovery Console does not allow you to use fsutil to query the dirty bit it is not a Recovery Console command. In reply to A. User's post on July 30, Thank you very much. I think we must leave it there. It seem as if the only answer is to fit a floppy drive and let it run.

I thought that we were in control of technology but once more technology controls us! That is not what it is saying It means "fix" things. If you would comply, and chkdsk is able to fix the volume, then you would not have the issue. I tried that and it didn't work - same error message when trying to open degrag program. That will bring you to the Recovery Console. To be sure, run it again and see if it finds any errors the second time. You'll find that the RC can find more and repair more than the chkdsk that is run at boot.

I will have to obtain a disk and then I will post the results. You have been very helpful Thank You for all your help. Here's how to fix the problem without the XP disc: before you do anything else, turn off your pc, unplug the network cable if on roadrunner or hi speed interent , and then reboot. When you reboot, you will see two choices. Once at the DOS prompt, it will ask which Windows installation would you like you log onto Next it will ask for the administrators password Check disk will run through a series of diagnostics and repair any broken files, etc.

At the end it will say if it found and fixed one or more errors on the volume. After this is complete, reboot the pc remain disconnected from the Internet. Once everything has loaded and settled down, open My Computer.

You might want to disable anti-virus at this point. Right click on the C: drive and select properties This should do it.

Turn off the pc, plug to the network cable back in and reboot. If this doesn't do it, you might have to defrag from Safe Mode. I hope everyone can learn from this as I have posted the solution. I find too many posts open ended and want to be as helpful with everyone as they have to me. God Bless America!!!!

Hello Yeoman I think I know what you are talking about here The larger the hard drive, the longer it takes. How long have you let it run and has it ever completed? Let me post the complete instructions for you here so we can refer to them if need be. If you have Spyware Doctor installed, uninstall it.

Click Start , then Run , type cmd in the Open box and click "Ok". At the prompt in the Command window, type the following commands, pressing "Enter" after each one: Please note the spaces in the following commands. This will allow checking drive C: fsutil dirty query c The x switch tells Windows to NOT check the specified drive on the next boot At this point, restart your computer, it will not do a chkdsk and will boot directly to Windows.

This next step is important as this is where the Dirty Bit will be unset. At the command prompt, type the following, pressing "Enter" after each one: Again, note the spaces. To manually run a full chkdsk operation Y To accept having it run on the next boot This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset that Dirty Bit. Be patient Finally, when the chkdsk operation has completed, type fsutil dirty query c: , press "Enter", and Windows will confirm that the Dirty Bit is not set on that drive.

Now reboot again and see if defragmenter will run. Yeoman Member Topic Starter Member 90 posts. Thanks for the replies Neverborn and Wannabe1. The main trouble as I mentioned, is that I never know whether the disk is actually being checked or not, because there is nothing to tell me. However I will update you with what action I have taken. Im not sure if I am replying correctly, the navigation is all new to me. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.

Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the nest time the system restarts? Thanks Wannabe1. Re your last I will go through the whole thing again, and follow your prompts exactly. Then I will leave the computer alone for say one and a half hours. Do you thing that will be enough. My disk is only one third full.
